Chippa United’s goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, a key player for the Super Eagles, is reported to have faced threats from disgruntled South African fans following his remarkable performance against the host country in the recent AFCON tournament. The goalkeeper, who plays for Chippa United in South Africa, has allegedly been warned by some fans against returning to his club after the conclusion of the AFCON.
Former Super Eagles international, Idah Peterside, disclosed these threats during an interview on Channels Television, emphasizing that messages have been sent to Nwabali, cautioning him not to go back to South Africa. The discontent among some South African fans is believed to stem from Nwabali’s pivotal role in preventing their team from reaching the finals.
While no reports of violence have emerged, Peterside highlighted the unsettling nature of the threats directed at the goalkeeper. He stated, “The biggest problem we have had is that we have gotten some messages where people have sent messages to the goalkeeper threatening him. I hear some people are telling him not to come back to South Africa since you didn’t want us to score. We have not heard of any violence, but just threats. They have been threatening him and threatening some people.”
