The Federal Government announced on Wednesday its plans to distribute 42,000 metric tonnes of grains, approved by President Bola Tinubu, to needy Nigerians at no cost. This initiative aims to alleviate the economic hardships faced by citizens due to rising inflation and currency devaluation. The distribution process involves collaboration with the Department of State Services and the National Emergency Management Agency to ensure the commodities reach targeted citizens nationwide.
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun also unveiled an intervention plan exceeding N5 billion to support residents grappling with the economic challenges. The intervention covers various sectors, including education, health, food distribution, and welfare packages for workers. Abiodun emphasized that the government is aware of the difficulties faced by Nigerians and is committed to addressing them.
Abiodun praised President Tinubu for his efforts in navigating the complexities of the nation’s economic landscape. The intervention plans in Ogun State include educational grants for primary and secondary school students, grants for tertiary institution students, health insurance for beneficiaries, and free distribution of food items to households. The state also plans to settle the backlog of deductions owed to workers, with a monthly commitment of N500 million.
The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, reiterated that the 42,000MT of grains would be distributed free of charge to the needy, and measures are in place to identify those who require assistance. The government intends to support 500,000 farmers to cultivate and produce one million metric tonnes of rice, significantly boosting Nigeria’s rice production.
Kyari revealed that 15 state governors have expressed interest in participating fully in this year’s dry season farming to address the food crisis in the country. The Federal Government aims to release 42,000MT of grains from the national strategic reserves, with the remaining 11,000MT reserved for emergency purposes.
President Tinubu had directed the release of the grains on February 8, 2024, as a response to the rising cost of food in Nigeria. The government assures that the distribution process will be thorough, targeting those in need, and emphasizes its commitment to addressing challenges in the agricultural sector.
