The Ogun State Police Command has reported the arrest of a 65-year-old clergyman, Timothy Adedibu, in connection with the alleged defilement of a nine-year-old girl in Magboro, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of the state. Adedibu, believed to be the leader of a local church, is accused of luring the minor into his apartment and engaging in inappropriate conduct with her. The police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are underway. The survivor’s family has been provided with forms for her medical examination and treatment, and all involved parties will be transferred to the headquarters for further investigation.
In a separate incident, the police also arrested a suspect identified as Prince Dara for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl in Abolaniyi Street, Idorawa, via Idi-Oke in the state. The incident reportedly occurred on February 8, 2024. The survivor, known as Odede, claimed that the suspect lured her into his house after seizing her bag, containing her mobile phone and personal effects. The police reported that the suspect threatened Odede with a knife, subjected her to multiple rapes, and eventually released her. Surveillance teams were mobilized to the scene, leading to the arrest of the suspect, who is now in custody for questioning. The victim received medical treatment, and the case, along with all involved parties, will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department in Abeokuta for discreet investigation.
Defilement is considered a serious sexual offense under Nigerian criminal law. Legal practitioner and human rights lawyer Collins Aigbogun emphasized that anyone found guilty of defilement, particularly of a girl under the age of 13, faces a felony charge and is liable for life imprisonment. Aigbogun highlighted the severity of the crime and noted that Ogun and Lagos states share similar legal provisions in addressing such cases.
