President Bola Tinubu has taken a decisive step to address the leadership crisis in Ondo State by directing the state’s House of Assembly to transfer power to Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, according to multiple reports.
Tinubu made the announcement during a meeting convened on Monday to address the escalating political tension in Ondo, signaling a proactive approach to resolving the ongoing issues.
Emphasizing the transfer of power to be unconditional, the president invoked the “Doctrine of Necessity,” a principle established in 2010 during the illness of then-President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, allowing for temporary power transfer in cases where the incumbent cannot fulfill their duties.
Sources close to the matter revealed that the power transfer would be facilitated through electronic signature, as Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, currently grappling with health issues, is physically unable to sign documents.
This decision, met with mounting pressure from various stakeholders, including the opposition People’s Democratic Party and civil society groups, is expected to bring stability to Ondo State, allowing Akeredolu to take medical leave and prioritize his well-being.
