The 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt has initiated the distribution of palliatives and educational materials to various schools and communities. In a recent effort, the division delivered materials valued at millions of naira to over four communities, including orphanages, schools, and kingdoms. Despite the significant value of the distributed items, the army downplayed the costs involved.
During an address to the communities, schools, orphanages, and the media, the Commander, Brigadier General Edet Effiong, explained that the Nigerian Army had launched “Operation Still Waters.” General Effiong clarified that this operation, typically initiated in the fourth quarter of the year, is designed to clear society of undesirable elements during the festive season and promote security and peace for law-abiding citizens.
He emphasized that the army’s role extends beyond combat operations, involving both kinetic and non-kinetic exercises. The “Operation Still Waters” exercise provides the military with increased access to civilians, fostering closer relationships and often yielding valuable information. General Effiong highlighted the importance of demonstrating that the military, while tasked with security, also engages in community support and administration.
The deliveries were made to several locations, including the Daughters of Charity, St Vincent De Paul Catholic Parish in Port Harcourt, Community Secondary School Ogbogbo in Okrika, Government Girls’ College in Okumgba-Ama Ogoloma, Okrika, the palace of Chief Tamonoi Mama-Koko Obudibo (the Chief of Ogoloma, Okrika), and Community Secondary School Umuakpahu in Oyigbo Local Government Area (LGA).
