In a recent development, a Kano State High Court, under the jurisdiction of Justice Nasiru Saminu, has granted bail to the controversial TikToker, Murja Kunya, setting the bail amount at N500,000. The bail conditions include providing two reliable sureties, one of whom must be a relative, and the other possessing landed property in Kano municipal.
Murja Kunya sought bail following a directive from the Kano Shari’ah Court, which mandated a mental evaluation by a psychiatric doctor. Justice Saminu, in his ruling, emphasized the necessity of Murja’s release, noting that she had been in custody since February 20, while the court was observing the Easter break.
Additionally, the court registry has been tasked with verifying the property owned by the sureties. Furthermore, the judge imposed restrictions on Murja’s use of her social media accounts until the case is resolved, warning that any violation would prompt the Kano Commissioner of Police to arrest her and bring her back to court.
The judge also mandated the presence of the defendants’ counsel, the Attorney General, representatives from the Hisbah Board, and the Commissioner of Police at future hearings to address amendments to the Kano State Hisbah Board Amended Law for proper adjudication.
The case has been adjourned until May 16, 2024, for further proceedings. Murja Kunya’s arrest by the Hisbah Board stemmed from concerns raised about her conduct and postings on Twitter, with allegations of immorality being leveled against her.
