The Federal Government has greenlit a significant boost in the salaries of civil servants, with increases ranging between 25% and 35% across the remaining six Consolidated Salary Structures. These structures encompass a variety of sectors, including the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS), Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), Consolidated Police Salary Structure (CONPOSS), Consolidated Para-military Salary Structure (CONPASS), Consolidated Intelligence Community Salary Structure (CONICCS), and Consolidated Armed Forces Salary Structure (CONAFSS).
This move follows earlier salary hikes for those in the tertiary education and health sectors, which encompassed structures like the Consolidated University Academic Salary Structure (CONUASS), Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS), Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS), Consolidated Tertiary Educational Institutions Salary Structure (CONTEDISS), Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS), and Consolidated Health Sector Salary Structure (CONHESS).
A statement released by Emmanuel Njoku, the Head of Press at the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC), confirmed that these salary increases came into effect on January 1, 2024. Additionally, the government approved pension increases ranging from 20% to 28% for pensioners under the Defined Benefits Scheme, aligning with Section 173(3) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). This adjustment applies across various grade levels, aiming to alleviate financial strains among retired public servants.
