Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has annulled the approval of 10,000 jobs in the State Civil Service, which was previously sanctioned by his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. Fubara declared that a new recruitment process would be conducted, citing flaws and compromises in the initial procedure.
Governor Wike had greenlit the immediate employment of a significant number of youths to address existing vacancies within the state’s workforce before concluding his tenure. However, during an interactive session with stakeholders in Port Harcourt, Fubara expressed dissatisfaction with the previous recruitment process, alleging political manipulation and irregularities.
Fubara emphasized the need for transparency in future employment initiatives, revealing that upon scrutiny, a substantial portion of the selected candidates were deemed ineligible due to age discrepancies and suspicions of political favoritism.
Addressing concerns about the cancelled employment scheme, Fubara highlighted the importance of forward-looking employment strategies, questioning the feasibility of hiring individuals in their fifties as civil servants due to limited years of service before retirement.
In emphasizing his commitment to governance, Fubara reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to fulfilling its social contract with the people of Rivers State. He urged service providers at the Rivers State Waste Management Agency to intensify efforts in promptly clearing refuse from the streets to maintain a cleaner city environment.
Dr. George Nwaeke, Head of Rivers State Civil Service, delivered Fubara’s message during a meeting with leaders and members of the RIWAMA Service Providers Association, underscoring the administration’s determination to uphold good governance practices and civic responsibilities.
