The Federal Government has announced significant updates regarding the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, aimed at ensuring its efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, revealed during a meeting with contractors in Abuja that adjustments have been made to the highway’s route to prevent potential damage to telecommunication companies’ subsea cables. Additionally, the project’s scale has been reduced from 10 lanes to six as a prudent cost-saving measure.
Umahi also disclosed that compensation totaling N10 billion has been disbursed to property owners affected by the necessary demolition for the construction of the 700km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. He further stated that the first 47 kilometers of the project are scheduled to be open to the public by May next year.
The construction of the highway, which began earlier this year, is a significant infrastructure initiative spanning nine states, with spurs leading to northern states, utilizing concrete pavement. Umahi assured that progress is being made, with over four kilometers of concrete road already completed on six lanes.
Addressing concerns raised by MTN regarding its subsea cable and the Okuaja community, Umahi explained the rerouting of the highway to accommodate these concerns while praising the contractor for their dedication and reasonable approach.
Umahi emphasized the long-term benefits of the project, highlighting its potential for tourism, industrial development, and return on investment. He projected completion of section one by May 29, 2025, with sections three and four nearing finalization pending stakeholder engagement.
Regarding financial constraints, Umahi acknowledged the challenges inherited by the government, including over 2,600 projects valued at N15 trillion. He noted the completion of over 80 percent of 330 initiated emergency projects valued at N260 billion.
Umahi stressed the ministry’s commitment to cost control, stating that contractors will no longer dictate project costs through excessive price variation. Additionally, he announced the imminent resumption of construction on the remaining section of the Abuja-Kano highway by Julius Berger after resolving challenges.
Concerning recent flooding at Kara bridge, Umahi assured that the issue has been addressed, with the installation of CCTV cameras underway to enhance security and reduce response time to incidents.
