The Lagos State Ministry of Health has confirmed 29 fatalities and 579 suspected cases of cholera within the past two weeks, according to a report released today. Speaking at a press briefing, Professor Akin Abayomi, the Commissioner for Health, attributed the high mortality rate to delayed hospital presentations or cases where patients were brought in already deceased.
“There have been 29 deaths and 579 suspected cases of cholera in the last two weeks,” Abayomi stated. “The delay in seeking medical care has unfortunately led to fatalities that could not be reversed.”
Abayomi also reassured the public that no cholera cases have been reported in schools. Earlier, on June 11, 2024, he had warned of a surge in severe gastroenteritis cases across various communities including Eti-Osa, Lagos Island, Ikorodu, and Kosofe Local Government Area.
