President Bola Tinubu has authorized a new minimum wage of N70,000 for Nigerian workers and committed to a regular review of the national minimum wage law every three years. The decision follows a meeting between the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday.
According to a statement from the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu affirmed these developments. He emphasized his commitment to supporting the private sector and state governments in meeting the new minimum wage requirements.
“The President made these announcements during a meeting with leaders of TUC and NLC in Abuja on Thursday, marking the second such meeting in the past seven days,” the statement read.
Onanuga also highlighted that labour leaders commended President Tinubu for his proactive stance, describing it as a “fatherly gesture.” Additionally, President Tinubu pledged to utilize his executive powers to address the issue of outstanding salaries owed to university unions, spanning four months.
