The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called upon President Bola Tinubu to urgently address the critical state of Nigeria’s economy and the soaring fuel prices that are adversely affecting citizens’ lives. In a statement issued by NANS Senate President Okunomo Adewumi, shared with PUNCH Online on Monday, the student body highlighted the severe impact of the ongoing economic downturn, which has exacerbated poverty, hunger, and hardships nationwide.
According to the statement, the continuous rise in fuel prices has triggered a chain reaction of inflation, making basic necessities unaffordable for many Nigerians and plunging them into unprecedented suffering. While acknowledging President Tinubu’s efforts under the “Renew Hope” agenda to rejuvenate the economy, NANS urged for a more comprehensive approach to tackle the current economic crisis.
The statement emphasized the need for President Tinubu to convene an emergency economic summit involving all relevant stakeholders and agencies. This summit, as proposed by NANS, aims to brainstorm innovative solutions to mitigate the economic challenges plaguing the country. The student body highlighted the ripple effects of exorbitant fuel prices, including increased transportation costs, skyrocketing food prices, and diminished purchasing power, which collectively contribute to a decline in the standard of living and exacerbate poverty and desperation among Nigerians.
NANS also cautioned that failure to address these pressing issues could lead to widespread protests and social unrest, potentially destabilizing the nation further. The statement concluded with a plea for proactive measures from President Tinubu to restore economic stability, instill hope among Nigerians, and ultimately improve their livelihoods.
