Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, has assured state workers of his unwavering commitment to implementing the new N70,000 minimum wage. Speaking during the presentation of N1 billion gratuity cheques to retirees in Ado Ekiti, Governor Oyebanji emphasized his dedication to meeting workers’ expectations once the wage bill is signed into law by the President.
“I am here to serve you. Let us wait for the President to sign the minimum wage into law, and rest assured, I will not disappoint you,” Governor Oyebanji affirmed.
Addressing the issue of local government autonomy following a Supreme Court decision, the governor expressed readiness to comply with the ruling, noting that local governments in Ekiti already operate with financial autonomy.
Governor Oyebanji also underscored his administration’s commitment to pensioners, highlighting ongoing efforts to clear pension arrears and gratuities. He apologized for delays in payments and assured pensioners that his government would continue to prioritize their welfare.
“We are not doing them a favour; they worked for these benefits, and we must pay them,” Governor Oyebanji stated, acknowledging the critical role pensioners play in the state’s development.
The Governor commended TETFUND for its contributions to infrastructural projects in Ekiti institutions and pledged to sustain efforts to improve the lives of retirees and workers alike. He concluded by urging pensioners to use their funds judiciously and beware of fraudulent schemes targeting their newfound financial security.
