The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the arrest of 97 members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as the Shi’ite group, following a violent clash in Abuja on Sunday. The confrontation resulted in the tragic death of two police officers, with three others sustaining serious injuries. Additionally, three patrol vehicles were set ablaze during the altercation.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, revealed that the arrests were made possible due to credible intelligence reports. The detained individuals are currently being held for prosecution as part of the ongoing investigation.
Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, has directed that the matter be handled with full diligence, vowing to bring all those involved in the attack to justice. He emphasized the police force’s commitment to resisting any form of anarchy or unrest across the country.
“The unprovoked killings of police officers in the line of duty are highly outrageous and unacceptable,” ACP Adejobi quoted the I-G as saying. “Those who murdered these policemen have murdered peace, and the Nigeria Police Force is determined to uncover the full extent of this attack and prevent future occurrences of such violence against police officers.”
The Inspector-General extended his sympathies to the families of the fallen officers and wished a speedy recovery to those currently receiving treatment. He also called on the public to support the police in their efforts to maintain law and order amidst ongoing extremist threats and violent crimes.
