The Nigeria Police Force has declared a British national, Andrew Wynne (also known as Andrew Povich or Drew Povey), and a Nigerian, Lucky Obiyan, wanted for allegedly plotting to overthrow the government of President Bola Tinubu. Wynne is accused of building a network of sleeper cells with the intent to destabilize the country and create chaos, potentially leading to a regime change.
According to the Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, Wynne had rented space at Labour House in Abuja, where he established a school as a cover for his subversive activities. The police allege that Wynne, with significant financial backing from foreign sources, orchestrated violent protests and disseminated false information to create a state of anarchy, justifying the overthrow of the government.
The police have already apprehended nine suspects linked to this plot, with investigations revealing that Wynne provided financial and operational guidance for the planned coup. He reportedly mobilized and deployed several billions of naira to his Nigerian collaborators, instructing them to incite the public to storm police and military facilities, anticipating a violent confrontation that would draw international condemnation of the Nigerian government.
Both Wynne and his local coordinator, Lucky Obiyan, have fled the country and are now the subjects of a global manhunt initiated by Nigerian authorities. The police are continuing their investigations and have pledged to bring those involved to justice.
