The Federal Government, through the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), is set to spend N47.5 billion on the infrastructural upgrade of 50 selected senior secondary schools across Nigeria. This was announced by the Commission’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Iyela Ajayi, during the groundbreaking ceremony for one of the schools in Koton Karfe, Kogi State.
Dr. Ajayi stated that the upgrade is part of the Commission’s mandate as an intervention agency and follows a comprehensive NEEDS assessment, which evaluated the condition of the schools. The project is in line with the directive of President Bola Tinubu to enhance the quality of education in the country.
“This is just the first phase,” Ajayi explained. “Once we complete this phase, we will report back to the President and the Minister to move on to the next phase. Schools not covered in this phase should be patient, as we will address them in subsequent rounds.”
The first phase of the rehabilitation, with an investment of N47.5 billion, aims to revitalize school infrastructure and improve learning conditions for students. NSSEC, established in 2021 under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari, is tasked with overseeing and improving senior secondary education nationwide.
