A 59-year-old Lagos resident, Yemi, narrowly escaped death after attempting to jump into the lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge due to overwhelming personal challenges. He was rescued on Friday by operatives from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) who were patrolling the bridge at the time.
Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, shared the incident on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “At about 12:00 p.m. today, RRS bike riders on routine patrol on the Third Mainland Bridge prevented a man from jumping into the lagoon. The man, Yemi, aged 59 of Ilasa, Lagos, stated that he was overwhelmed by challenges.”
Following the intervention, Yemi was placed in protective custody while awaiting the arrival of his family. The Commander of the RRS, CSP Shola Jejeloye, has provided Yemi with counseling and assured that he will remain safe until his family arrives.
This is one of several similar incidents on the bridge. In another case mentioned by Hundeyin, a foreign national, driven to the bridge by his baby mama, was also rescued after attempting to jump into the lagoon. A passerby, noticing the man’s suspicious behavior, alerted RRS operatives who successfully intervened.
