The Kogi State House of Assembly has called for the dismissal of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, citing his mishandling of the corruption case against former governor Yahaya Bello. During Monday’s plenary session in Lokoja, the Assembly criticized the EFCC’s alleged heavy-handed attempt to arrest Bello, accusing the commission of firing gunshots at the Kogi Governor’s Lodge in Abuja, endangering both Bello and the current governor, Usman Ododo.
Lawmakers, led by Akus Lawal, condemned the EFCC’s actions in the N80.2 billion fraud case, calling them humiliating and unprofessional. Other members, including Abu Jibril and Bode Ogunmola, demanded that Olukoyede not only be sacked but prosecuted for alleged assassination attempts.
The Assembly further accused the EFCC of acting on a politically motivated script, with the Majority Leader Suleiman AbdulRazak alleging that EFCC officials begged Bello to stage a false arrest. The lawmakers passed a resolution urging President Bola Tinubu to remove Olukoyede to restore public trust in the agency.
Meanwhile, a non-governmental organization, Journalists Against Corruption (JAC), accused Governor Ododo of shielding Bello from justice, urging President Tinubu to intervene and prevent further embarrassment to the nation. Despite the EFCC’s ongoing efforts, the Assembly remains adamant in its call for the chairman’s removal.
