The Ogun State Police Command has launched an investigation into the tragic death of Babaji Daule, a zookeeper at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) Wildlife Park in Abeokuta. The 35-year-old was fatally attacked by a lion after reportedly neglecting to secure the enclosure during a feeding routine.
According to the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, Daule, a trained lion handler, was feeding the animal when he failed to properly lock the safety gates. This oversight allowed the lion to escape and attack him, inflicting fatal injuries to his neck.
“The Chief Security Officer of OOPL informed the Divisional Police Officer that Babaji Daule tragically lost his life after the lion attacked him due to the failure to secure the lion’s enclosure,” Odutola explained. She added that the animal was shot to prevent further harm, and Daule’s body was taken to the State Hospital morgue in Abeokuta.
The incident reportedly occurred after the park’s closing time, when some guests requested a demonstration of the lion’s feeding routine. Feeling confident with the animal, Daule bypassed the standard safety procedures, which led to the fatal attack.
In a statement, the park management expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Daule, noting that the incident was an isolated departure from the standard operating procedures. The management assured the public that investigations are underway and that they remain committed to maintaining the highest safety standards for visitors, staff, and wildlife at the park.
