Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has clarified the role of his first daughter, Mrs. Helen Obareki, in coordinating the Office of the First Lady following the passing of his wife. This clarification follows media reports suggesting that Obareki had been appointed as the First Lady of the state.
Speaking at the All Nations Christian Ministry Intl in Eket during a condolence visit from the First Lady of Nigeria, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, Governor Eno explained that his daughter’s position is rooted in her previous role as the Special Assistant to his late wife, who had been the First Lady. He emphasized that this was not a political appointment but rather a natural decision, given her experience and close involvement with the late First Lady’s programs.
Governor Eno explained that his daughter’s appointment as the Senior Special Assistant and Coordinator, Office of the First Lady ensures the continuity of the office’s activities, particularly his late wife’s pet project, the Golden Initiative for All (GIFA), which focuses on supporting women, the elderly, and vulnerable groups. He described the move as part of his family’s healing process, allowing the office to continue running smoothly and preserving the legacy of his late wife’s initiatives.
Eno dismissed the notion that a First Lady is appointed, stressing that First Ladies come with the governor and are not politically installed. He reiterated that Obareki’s role is primarily administrative and operational, keeping the office functional and ensuring none of its programs die.
“Mrs. Obareki had worked closely with her mother from the beginning and has the necessary experience and insight to continue the important work. This is a natural outcome, not a political decision,” Eno stated. He added that having his daughter as the coordinator also offers him comfort during this difficult time.
Governor Eno thanked Mrs. Tinubu and her entourage for their support and acknowledged her approval of Obareki’s role as apt, noting the importance of keeping the office’s projects alive for the benefit of the people of Akwa Ibom.
