Former Senator Dino Melaye has triumphed in a six-year-long legal battle, with the Federal Government’s final case against him dismissed. The FCT High Court in Maitama, under Justice Sylvanus Oriji, acquitted Melaye of two charges related to allegedly providing false information about an assassination attempt on his life in 2017.
The case, which began in February 2018, stemmed from accusations that Melaye had falsely implicated Edward Onoja, the former Chief of Staff to Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, in the assassination plot. After years of legal proceedings, Melaye was cleared of all charges, marking the twelfth and final victory in his legal standoff with the government.
Celebrating the verdict on the social media platform X, Melaye expressed gratitude to his legal team and reaffirmed his trust in divine justice. “In all the vicissitudes of life, I trust in God only. He is always with the just,” he wrote. He further declared, “Justice served after six years. Justice delayed is never justice denied. God alone be praised. SEN. DINO MELAYE 12 – FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND IGP 0.”
The legal battle saw delays, including the passing of Justice Aromeh Benson Akogu in December 2017. Melaye initially pleaded not guilty to the charges in March 2018. Over the years, he also faced other allegations, including claims that he falsely accused the Kogi State police command of attempts on his life, all of which were denied by state authorities.
