According to a statement by TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, the national grid experienced what was described as a “partial disturbance” on Monday, which hindered electricity supply in various regions. Although TCN initiated recovery efforts, another setback occurred on Tuesday morning, delaying the full restoration of power.
Mbah revealed that 90% of the grid had been restored by Tuesday afternoon, with bulk power resupplied to major substations, including Abuja. However, many areas were still without power as of 7 p.m. Tuesday. Notably, the Ibom Gas generating station continued to supply electricity to certain areas in the South-South, such as Uyo and Eket, despite the grid disturbance.
In response to concerns of a nationwide grid collapse, Minister Adelabu clarified that the situation was not as severe as reported. “This was not a grid collapse. A collapse affects 100% of the infrastructure, but this was just a trip-off in certain regions,” he explained. The minister added that key cities such as Abuja, Lagos, and Ibadan were unaffected, and power was restored in under two hours.
The Federal Government has assured the public that the grid recovery process is ongoing and that a thorough investigation will follow once power is fully restored.
