IGP Urges Nigerians to Report Police Misconduct Through Official Channels, Not Social Media

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has advised Nigerians to avoid reporting police misconduct on social media and instead utilize the Police Complaints Response Unit (PCRU). Speaking at the PPROs/Police Communication Experts’ Conference in Asaba, Delta State, on Monday, Egbetokun stressed that addressing grievances through official channels ensures transparency and prevents misinformation.

Why Social Media Complaints are Discouraged

The IGP explained that while social media plays a significant role in shaping public perception, it often amplifies unverified information that can tarnish the police force’s image.
“We appeal to the public not to resort to social media when reporting the conduct of police officers but rather use the Police Complaints Response Unit,” he said. He highlighted that the PCRU provides a structured, accountable process for handling complaints effectively.

Police Commitment to Reforms

Egbetokun reaffirmed the police’s commitment to transparency and accountability as part of broader reform efforts. He acknowledged the media as a key partner in fostering public trust and urged police spokespersons to prioritize professionalism and responsiveness.
“This conference is part of police reform, aimed at building trust and respect, which will, in turn, help us gain public trust,” he noted.

Delta State Governor’s Remarks

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, also addressed the conference, emphasizing the challenges of policing in complex states like Delta and Lagos. He commended the IGP for his efforts, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the Nigerian police effectively.
“As an officer who served in Lagos as CP, he is capable of policing Nigeria. Delta and Lagos States are very tough states to police; therefore, any officer who served in Delta or Lagos as CP will police Nigeria well,” Oborevwori remarked.

Fostering Public Engagement

Both the IGP and Governor Oborevwori stressed the importance of effective communication between the police and the public. They urged Police Public Relations Officers to combat misinformation and highlight the positive contributions of the force.

This initiative aligns with ongoing reforms aimed at improving the image of the police and strengthening trust between law enforcement and citizens.
