The baby, estimated to be around 40 days old, was found by the clinic’s staff, who promptly brought the child inside for medical care. The clinic owner reported the incident to the Oru Police Division, according to the command’s spokesperson, Omolola Odutola.
Odutola confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify the mother and any other individuals involved. She added, “The medical doctor in charge of the hospital alerted our division about the child. We have initiated an investigation into the matter, and the child is currently receiving treatment at the hospital.”
The abandonment of newborns is a recurring issue in Nigeria. In 2022, a baby girl who could neither walk nor talk was left in front of a shop on Tajudeen Bello Street, Giwa Oke-Aro Road, Ogun State. She was later taken into police custody after being rejected by local orphanages.
Similarly, in January 2024, the Ogun State Police arrested a 30-year-old woman, Olubunmi Ajayi, for attempting to drown her five-month-old baby, Imole Anifowose, in a river in Sagamu. The child was rescued by a passerby, Olusola Sonaya, who witnessed the incident.
The latest case underscores the persistent issue of child abandonment in the country, with authorities urging residents to report such incidents to the police for prompt action.
