President Bola Tinubu has formally asked the Senate to confirm the appointment of Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede as the substantive Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
The request, aligned with Section 218 (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) and Section 18 (1) of the Armed Forces Act, was presented in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session.
President Tinubu highlighted Oluyede’s “exceptional professionalism, leadership, and dedication to national security,” which he has demonstrated since assuming the role in an acting capacity.
“In light of his qualifications, experience, and contributions, Lt. Gen. Oluyede is well-positioned to lead the Nigerian Army effectively. I urge the Senate to prioritize this confirmation for continuity in military leadership,” Tinubu stated.
The Senate has referred the nomination to its Committee on the Army, instructing it to screen Oluyede and report back for further consideration.
Oluyede was appointed acting COAS following the tragic passing of Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, who died after battling an illness.
