The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) on Friday paraded 36 scavengers, locally known as Baba Nbola, over their alleged involvement in criminal activities, including vandalism and theft of public infrastructure.
Arrests and Crimes
FCT Commandant Olusola Odumosu disclosed that the suspects were apprehended in various parts of the city and its suburbs during an ongoing crackdown. This followed directives from FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to ban scavenging and suspend operations at Pantaker Markets for two weeks.
“These individuals were arrested for engaging in criminal acts under the guise of scavenging,” Odumosu said. He explained that the suspects vandalized public infrastructure such as manhole covers, streetlights, and solar panels, which they sold as scrap, causing extensive damage to the city.
Recovered items included:
- Weapons: Four daggers, three jack knives, chisels, and iron rods.
- Drugs: Narcotics, codeine syrup, and wraps of cannabis.
Links to Criminal Networks
Investigations revealed that some scavengers also act as informants for criminal gangs, including armed robbers, kidnappers, and terrorists. They reportedly profile potential victims based on household waste and monitor their movements.
“Many families have fallen victim to kidnapping, ransom demands, and other crimes because these scavengers provide information about their targets,” Odumosu stated.
Public Advisory
The Commandant urged residents to:
- Avoid patronizing scavengers: Residents should dispose of waste through proper channels and avoid interacting with scavengers for safety reasons.
- Report suspicious activities: Residents are encouraged to cooperate with security agencies by providing information on suspicious movements or activities.
Zero-Tolerance Policy
Odumosu reiterated the FCT Administration’s zero-tolerance stance on scavenging within the city and suburbs, emphasizing that scavenging is now restricted to designated dumpsites. He warned violators of strict prosecution.
“The public is hereby advised to dispose of their refuse properly and stop patronizing Baba Nbolas for their own safety and that of their families,” he said.
Prosecution and Further Actions
The NSCDC is currently profiling and investigating the suspects. The command assured the public that due process would be followed in prosecuting those found guilty. Efforts to restore safety and order in the FCT will continue.
