The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) revealed on Wednesday that the intensified offensive, led by Operation Fansan Yamma, targeted Turji’s hideouts in Gebe, Isa, and Shinkafi Local Government Areas. Among those neutralized were Turji’s younger brother, Dosso, and a close ally, Danbokolo.
The operations, conducted between January 20 and 21, also thwarted an attempted reinforcement led by a loyalist of late terrorist leader Halilu Sububu. Suleiman, a notable member of the group, was killed during a firefight.
“The death of Bello Turji’s second-in-command, commanders, and fighters marks a major blow to the terrorist network’s military capabilities,” said Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, outgoing Director of Defence Media Operations.
The crackdown follows Turji’s threat to unleash violence in Zamfara communities in retaliation for the arrest of his associate, Bako Wurgi, in December 2024. DHQ noted that Turji abandoned his fighters and son during recent clashes, leaving them vulnerable to military action.
Residents in the affected areas expressed relief and commended the military’s efforts. Abubakar Isa, a resident of Isa LGA, said the operation brings hope for renewed peace. Muhammad Abdullah from Goronyo described the killings as a victory for those who have suffered economic collapse due to banditry.
Mallam Nuhu Bello, a commercial motorcyclist from Shinkafi LGA, recounted how Turji’s gang forced him to abandon farming due to extortion and insecurity. “This development gives us hope for a return to normalcy,” he said.
The Sokoto State Government urged residents to remain vigilant as operations continue to disrupt bandit strongholds. A statement by retired Colonel Ahmed Usman, Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Security Matters, highlighted the destruction of terrorist enclaves and the rescue of hundreds of kidnapped victims.
“As security forces increase pressure, some bandits may attempt to infiltrate communities or seek medical aid under disguise,” the statement warned, urging residents to report suspicious activities.
The government reiterated its commitment to collaboration with security agencies to restore peace and stability, aligning with its nine-point agenda for a safer, more prosperous Sokoto State.
With troops maintaining momentum, the military vowed to sustain efforts until Bello Turji and his network are completely neutralized, ensuring security for the region’s residents.
