The suspended traditional ruler of Orile Ifo, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, has been remanded at the Ilaro Correctional Centre in Ogun State after failing to meet his bail conditions.
The spokesperson for the correctional facility, Yinka Odukoya, confirmed the development on Wednesday, stating that the monarch remained in custody as he had yet to fulfill the bail requirements set by the court.
The Ogun State Police Command arraigned Ogunjobi on Tuesday following a viral video that showed him physically and verbally assaulting a 73-year-old man, Abraham Areola.
According to the charge sheet (MH2b8c/2025), the suspended monarch faces charges of conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace, offenses punishable under Sections 517, 351, and 249(d) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
The court, presided over by Magistrate F. A. Iroko, granted him bail with two sureties in the sum of ₦5 million each, who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
The viral video, which sparked widespread condemnation, showed Ogunjobi forcing Areola to kneel on the road while berating him with curses and accusations. The monarch also threatened to use his alleged police connections to have Areola jailed. At one point, one of Ogunjobi’s aides struck the elderly man and ordered him to prostrate before the ruler.
In response, the Coalition of Civil Society Organisations in Ogun State commended the government for swiftly suspending the monarch, urging full prosecution. Similarly, the state Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) praised the authorities and called for the arrest of the individual who physically assaulted the victim.
As public outcry grows, legal proceedings continue, with Ogunjobi remaining behind bars until his bail conditions are met.
