A devastating fire outbreak at an Islamic school in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area, Zamfara State, has claimed the lives of 17 Almajiri students, leaving 16 others injured.
The fire, which started late Tuesday night, raged for about three hours, trapping several students inside the school’s study hall.
According to a resident, Abdulrasaq Kaura, the fire was reportedly caused by stored sticks, locally known as “Kara”. He recounted how students were initially evacuated, but it was only after the flames subsided that charred remains were discovered inside the building.
The Chairman of Kaura-Namoda Local Government, Mannir Haidara, confirmed the tragic incident, stating that he was on his way to assess the situation further.
Speaking to PUNCH Online, the Public Relations Officer of the Zamfara State Police Command, Yazid Abubakar, also confirmed the incident. He stated that 17 students lost their lives, while 17 others are currently receiving medical treatment. An investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire.
Authorities and local residents are mourning the loss, as the community grapples with the tragedy.
