The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Julius Abure, has reaffirmed his commitment to zoning the party’s 2027 presidential ticket to the South-East, stating that he has no regrets about the decision.
Abure made this declaration on Sunday at a rally organized by LP members from the South-East, ahead of the Abuja Area Council election. He also assured that the party remains committed to supporting Ndigbo’s aspiration to lead Nigeria in the future.
Call for Unity and Realignment
While addressing the gathering, Abure emphasized the importance of unity among South-East politicians and their need to build stronger alliances with other regions if they hope to secure victory in 2027.
“Before the 2023 general election, I used to believe erroneously that South-East people were not united. But when Peter Obi joined the party, and I had the privilege of campaigning for him across Nigeria, I discovered that the Igbos are the most united, industrious, hardworking, and fearless,” he said.
He continued, “That is why today, I have no regrets that despite all odds, we zoned the presidential ticket of our party to the South-East. However, the Igbos must also go back to the drawing board and realign with other sections of the country. They need to be strong, firm, and united with leadership.”
No Imposition of Candidates
Abure assured aspirants that LP would not impose candidates on them, promising that party primaries would be credible, free, and fair.
“The reason why Nigeria and other political parties are in trouble is that leaders always want to subvert the wishes and aspirations of the people. As the National Chairman of LP, I stand to discourage that in our party,” he stated.
He further expressed confidence in the party’s strength, asserting that the upcoming Federal Capital Territory election would be a contest between the Labour Party and “others.”
