Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (retd.), has expressed deep gratitude to ex-military president Ibrahim Babangida for restoring his rank and honour, decades after facing treason charges.
Speaking at the launch of Babangida’s autobiography, A Journey in Service, in Abuja on Thursday, Gowon acknowledged that Babangida played a crucial role in reversing the challenges he faced after being overthrown in 1975.
“I had a very rough time in government; I was even charged with treason,” Gowon recalled. “Later, President Shagari rescinded that order, and you (IBB) eventually restored my rank and honour. You did quite a lot for the country.”
He also lauded Babangida for his long-standing commitment to Nigeria’s development and their enduring friendship.
Also speaking at the event, former President Goodluck Jonathan commended Babangida for documenting his experiences, noting that the book would serve as an important historical resource.
“If you contribute to documenting history, it strengthens and makes it more relevant. So today, you are helping us,” Jonathan said.
Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.), also paid tribute to Babangida, celebrating their decades-long bond.
“My relationship with Ibrahim has lasted over 80 years. Ibrahim, I want to thank you again for your friendship and brotherhood. We often reminisce about our past adventures, which always bring smiles to our faces. May these smiles continue in our twilight years,” he remarked.
The event was graced by several dignitaries, including President Bola Tinubu, former Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and other notable political figures.
