The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) commenced a three-day national mourning period on Monday to honor the 17 soldiers tragically killed by irate youths in Okuama, Ughelli South Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State.
Among the fallen heroes are distinguished officers including Lieutenant Colonel Abdullahi Hassan Ali, the Commanding Officer of 181 Amphibious Battalion Oleh, Major Gembu Shafa, the Joint Task Force (JTF) Commander in Bomadi, as well as another Major and a Captain.
As a mark of respect and tribute to the fallen soldiers, flags are being flown at half-mast in all military locations across the country. This directive was issued by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, to the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
The gesture of flying the flag at half-mast serves as a solemn acknowledgment of the sacrifice made by these brave personnel in service to the nation. It is a poignant symbol of respect and sorrow for those who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
