A suspect identified as Nkereuwem Ekpo has been apprehended for the alleged brutal murder of his grandmother, Martina Akpan, in Udo Village, Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.
According to Odiko Macdon, the state police Public Relations Officer, the tragic incident occurred while the suspect and his grandmother were harvesting cassava stems on the farm. Ekpo reportedly used a machete to fatally wound his grandmother, Martina Akpan, aged about 90 years. Subsequently, he allegedly stole the sum of N16,750 from her belongings and fled the scene.
Confirming the incident, Macdon stated that Ekpo was paraded at a press briefing on Friday following his arrest. The suspect stands accused of the gruesome murder and theft from his grandmother.
This incident echoes a similarly disturbing case reported in January by PUNCH Metro, where Ibrahim Salisu was arrested by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly hacking his brother, Malaimi Yellow, to death over an alleged sexual demand. Such incidents underscore the prevalence of domestic violence and the need for swift justice to be served in cases of such heinous crimes.
